The Bucklebury Estate has been identifying trees which will become the veteran trees of the future.
These will have the surrounding trees removed so that they recieve more light and don't have to grow as tall. This means that they will live much longer than most trees in a woodland and have more features like rot holes, dead branches and loose bark - all of which are great for wildlife.
In the photo, you can see an Oak which is surrounded by younger Birch trees. The Oak is starting to lose its lower branches because of the shade cast by the Birch trees. We will remove the Birch trees to allow the Oak to flourish.
